A path overlooking the cliffs with breathtaking views of the sea and where Ranier Maria Rillke, the Austrian born poet from Prague found inspiration during his stay at the nearby Duino Castle.
Duino Castle
The magical castle perched on the last rocky spur of the Karst overlooking the gulf of Trieste, just a stone's throw from the legendary trail named after the poet Rainer Maria Rilke.
Miramare Castle
Miramare Castle is one of the few well-preserved, remaining examples of a noble residence in Europe which hasn't undergone any dramatic changes. The castle and the park that surrounds it were built by order of Maximillian of Hapsburg (1832-1867), brother of Franz Ferdinand, Emperor of Austria.
The Fortress of Monrupino
Though not a real castle, the fortification located on top of a hill is really charming.
The underground River Timavo
The crystalline waters of the river flow in the subterranean Karst for kilometres and emerge in the vicinity of San Giovanni di Duino at the foot of an ancient Gothic church which dates back to the 15th Century.
Giant Cave
It was inserted in the Guinness World Records in1995 as the largest tourist cave in the world. Given its vastness, the large hall (more than 100 meters high, 280 meters long and 65 meters wide) could easily contain St. Peter's Basilica! Discovered back in 1840, today it the scene of cultural events, concerts and scientific research. It houses the Speleological Museum.
